The Integrated River Engineering Project on the Danube to the East of Vienna comprises the Danube section east of Vienna, from the Freudenau power plant to the Austrian-Slovakian border (river kilometres 1921 to 1872.70). This river section shows deficits in the fields of hydro-engineering, inland navigation and ecology calling for extensive action.
The targets defined for the project are to halt the progressive deepening of the Danube river
bed, to achieve a lasting improvement of navigation conditions and to improve the ecological situation in the Danube floodplains. Keeping in mind the need for flood protection measures, these improvements will be achieved through river engineering measures only; the free-flowing section will be maintained.
